Gunjala Gondi
Script: Qa71
Family: Indic
Type: abugida
Direction: LTR
Gunjala Gondi is one of two scripts devised specifically for the Gondi language of central India; the other is the Masaram Gondi script. The Gunjala variety takes its name from the village of Gunjala in Telangana, where its use was documented. It is believed to be an older indigenous script that existed among certain Gondi communities alongside the use of regional borrowed scripts. Like Masaram Gondi, it is an abugida written from left to right, with consonants bearing an inherent vowel and diacritics modifying that vowel. The script was added to Unicode in version 11.0 (2018) following documentation and advocacy work by scholars and community members working to revitalise Gondi literacy.
