Abau New Testament (AAUWBT)
Overview
The New Testament in the Abau language of the Green River area, Sandaun Province, Papua New Guinea, completed by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. and copyrighted in 2006. Abau belongs to the Upper Sepik branch of the Sepik language family [2] and is spoken in Sandaun (West Sepik) Province. Population estimates vary: Joshua Project reports 12,000 [1], while a 2000 census recorded 7,267 speakers. [2] The language has several dialects, including Central, Downriver, Downriver border, and Upriver (Oriyai). [2] The vernacular title of the New Testament is God so Sokior-ok Iwon. Bible portions were first available to the Abau community from 1990 onward; the full New Testament, published in 2006, represents the culmination of that multi-decade project. [1] Alongside the translation work, an Abau literacy program began with SIL involvement in 1990, and by 1994 an Abau Training Centre had been established. [4]
