Acoli 1985 Edition (ACHBSU)

Overview

The Acoli 1985 Edition is a New Testament published by the Bible Society of Uganda, representing the first complete Scripture publication in the Acoli language. [1] Acoli (also spelled Acholi) is a Southern Luo language spoken by the Acholi people of northern Uganda and parts of South Sudan. The Acholi people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Uganda, with a rich oral tradition and cultural heritage rooted in the Nilotic Luo migration. The Bible Society of Uganda, a member of the United Bible Societies, undertook this translation as part of its mission to make Scripture available in Uganda's many languages. [2] The complete Acholi Bible, including both Old and New Testaments, was published in 1986. [3] A revised edition of the Acholi Bible was launched by the Bible Society of Uganda in October 2025, updating orthographic standards for improved readability. [2]
