Achi Rabinal New Testament (new orthography) (ACRNNT)

Overview

The Achi Rabinal New Testament (new orthography) was published in 2009 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc., under the vernacular title Ri utzilaj tzij re ri kanimajawal Jesucristo. [1] The translation was primarily the work of Rodrigo and Carol Barrera, Wycliffe missionaries who worked among the Achi in San Miguel Chicaj for approximately 40 years, spanning much of Guatemala's internal armed conflict (1960–1996). [2] Achi is a Mayan language of the K'ichean branch spoken primarily in the Baja Verapaz department of Guatemala; the Rabinal dialect has approximately 37,000 speakers centered on the town of Rabinal, while a related Cubulco dialect has roughly 48,000 speakers. [3] This edition uses the reformed orthography adopted after the Guatemalan government standardized Mayan writing systems through Government Accord 1046-87 in 1987, superseding earlier Spanish-based spelling conventions. [4] A companion edition in traditional (pre-1987) orthography (ACRTNT) was published simultaneously in 2009. [1] Earlier Scripture portions in Achi had been available from as early as 1962, with New Testament work spanning 1984–2009. [3]
