Achi Rabinal New Testament (traditional orthography) (ACRTNT)
Overview
The Achi Rabinal New Testament (traditional orthography) was published in 2009 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc., under the vernacular title Ri utzilaj tzij re ri kanimajawal Jesucristo. [1] The translation was primarily the work of Rodrigo and Carol Barrera, Wycliffe missionaries who labored among the Achi in San Miguel Chicaj for approximately 40 years. [2] Achi is a Mayan language of the K'ichean branch spoken predominantly in Baja Verapaz, Guatemala; the Rabinal dialect has an estimated 37,000 speakers. [3] This edition preserves the older orthographic conventions that predated the Guatemalan government's standardization of Mayan writing systems through Government Accord 1046-87 in 1987, which replaced earlier Spanish-based spelling conventions with a unified alphabet for Mayan languages. [4] The traditional orthography edition was published to serve readers already literate in the pre-reform spelling, while a parallel edition in the new standardized orthography (ACRNNT) was published simultaneously in 2009. [1] Scripture portions in Achi were available as early as 1962, with concentrated New Testament translation work running from 1984 to completion in 2009. [3]
