Adyghe Old Testament Portions (ADYIBT)

Overview

The Adyghe Old Testament Portions contain five Old Testament books (Genesis, 1-2 Samuel, and 1-2 Kings) in the Adyghe language (ISO 639-3: ady), a Northwest Caucasian language spoken by approximately 120,000 people primarily in the Republic of Adyghea in the northwest Caucasus region of the Russian Federation [1]. The translation was produced by the Institute for Bible Translation (IBT), based in Stockholm. IBT published the Adyghe New Testament in the early 1990s and has since been working systematically through the Old Testament: 1-2 Samuel appeared in 2002, Genesis in 2005, Ruth, Esther, and Jonah in 2006, Psalms in 2007, 1-2 Kings in 2009, Exodus in 2014, Proverbs in 2014, Daniel in 2017, and Deuteronomy in 2020 [1]. The translation process involves at least four drafts with exegetical checking, internal reviewing, philological editing, field-testing, consultant checking, and external reviewing at each stage [1]. Audio recordings of some books have been produced with professional actors from the Adyghe National Theater [1].
