Eastern Arrernte New Testament (AERWBT)
Overview
The Eastern Arrernte New Testament (titled Angkentye Mwerre in the vernacular) is a 2016 translation produced by Wycliffe Bible Translators and published in partnership with Bible Society Australia. [1] The project took more than twenty-five years to complete and was the result of a long-term collaboration between indigenous elders from the Santa Teresa (Ltyentye Apurte) community and the Alice Springs region, together with linguists from the Lutheran community and the Australian Society for Indigenous Languages (AuSIL), whose predecessor organization began language work in Australia in 1961. [2] Eastern Arrernte (ISO 639-3: aer) is spoken by approximately 2,000 people in the Northern Territory, with speakers concentrated in the Catholic community of Santa Teresa and around Alice Springs. [2][3] A fuller edition, the Angkentye Mwerre Shorter Bible (subtitled Ayey Ngkarte-Akerte) containing the complete New Testament together with Genesis, portions of Exodus, and Ruth, was completed and formally dedicated in Alice Springs in July 2017 during NAIDOC Week, enabling about 5,000 central Australian Aboriginal people to access the Bible in their own Arrernte language. [2][3] Copyright for the translation is held by Wycliffe Bible Translators Australia. [1]
