Agutaynen New Testament (AGNWPS)
Overview
The Agutaynen New Testament, titled Ang Bitala Tang Dios: Ba-long Inigoan (The Word of God: New Testament), was published in 2004 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. [1] Translation work began in 1986 under SIL Philippines staff including J. Stephen Quakenbush (a sociolinguist who later served as SIL Philippines Linguistics Coordinator from 2004 to 2007 [5]), Janice Quakenbush, Missy Melvin, and Gail Hendrickson, alongside Agutaynen community co-workers. [2] Agutaynen is spoken by approximately 15,000 people primarily on Agutaya Island and six smaller Cuyo Islands in the province of Palawan, western Philippines. [3] The translation project also gave rise to an Agutaynen-English dictionary of over 6,000 entries, published in 2014, and has been studied as a case of Bible translation contributing to language vitality; Quakenbush's 2015 chapter in Language Vitality Through Bible Translation documents the translation's role in sustaining the language.
