Western Apache New Testament (APWWNT)

Overview

The Western Apache New Testament, titled BIK'EHGO"IHI'NAŃ BIYATI', was published in 2012 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. and is the culmination of a translation project with deep roots in earlier Wycliffe work. [1] The foundational translation was carried out by Faye Edgerton and Faith Hill of Wycliffe Bible Translators, working together with Apache co-translators Celena Perry, Britton Goods, Johnson Ethelbah, and Happy Moses, into the San Carlos and White Mountain dialects of Western Apache. [2] An earlier edition of the Apache New Testament was presented to President Lyndon B. Johnson in a ceremony at the United States Senate Office Building on September 30, 1966 — the occasion on which the Senate passed a resolution proclaiming a Bible Translation Day. [2] Faye Edgerton (1889–1968) was an SIL-trained Wycliffe linguist who had previously led the translation of the Navajo New Testament (1956) before turning her attention to Apache; manuscripts and translation notes from her Apache work are preserved at Northern Arizona University. [3] Western Apache is an Athabaskan language spoken by approximately 14,000 people across the White Mountain, San Carlos, Cibecue, and Southern Tonto communities of Arizona. [4]
