Overview

The Egyptian Arabic Translation (EAT) is a complete Bible in colloquial Egyptian Arabic (Masri), produced by Wycliffe Bible Translators and published by the United Bible Societies. Egyptian Arabic is the most widely spoken Arabic vernacular, with approximately 68 million native speakers, and is linguistically distinct from Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) used in most other Arabic Bible translations. [1] The EAT aims to make the Scriptures accessible in the everyday spoken language of Egypt, using vocabulary common to the colloquial register rather than the formal literary Arabic of classical translations. [2] This is significant because many Egyptians, particularly those with limited formal education, find MSA texts difficult to understand.
