New Testament in the Ayoreo language, a Zamucoan language spoken by approximately 4,700 people in the Gran Chaco region of Bolivia (Santa Cruz) and Paraguay (Chaco and Alto Paraguay). The translation was primarily the work of Maxine Morarie, who with her husband Howard joined New Tribes Mission in 1950 and began linguistic work with the Ayoré in 1952. Over 32 years she produced reading primers, dictionaries, a grammar, and completed the first Ayoreo New Testament in 1982, with collaboration from Janet Briggs. Morarie received an honorary doctorate from Colorado Christian University in 2019 for her lifelong work. The 2018 AYOETS fileset is the Ethnos360 (NTM rebranded in 2017) digital text release. NTM's history with the Ayoreo dates to 1943, when five missionaries including Cecil Dye were killed — a foundational event that drove decades of mission work. Approximately 100 uncontacted Ayoreo remain in isolated forest groups.
