Benabena New Testament (BEFWBT)

Overview

The Benabena New Testament, titled Ka Lamana'a Mono'i Lu Mu Tifi'ehina Ka Yabe, was published in 1982 by Wycliffe Bible Translators and represents the first complete New Testament translation for the Benabena-speaking community of Papua New Guinea's Eastern Highlands Province. [1] Benabena (Bena-bena) is a Papuan language of the Gorokan family within the Trans-New Guinea Phylum, closely related to Gahuku, and spoken in the Goroka District of Eastern Highlands Province by approximately 45,000 people. [2] The language is considered endangered despite its relatively large speaker population, as younger speakers increasingly use Tok Pisin as their primary daily language. [2] SIL International has maintained linguistic archives for the language including a Benabena dictionary. [3]
