Bengali: Easy-to-Read Version (BENERV)
Overview
The Bengali Easy-to-Read Version (ERV) is a full Bible translation in Bengali, the fifth most spoken language in the world with approximately 228 million speakers, primarily in Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. [1] The Easy-to-Read Version was originally developed by the World Bible Translation Center (WBTC), which later merged with Bible League International. [2] The ERV uses a dynamic equivalence translation methodology, rendering the meaning of the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts in clear, contemporary language with simplified vocabulary and short sentences, making it accessible to new readers and those for whom Bengali may be a second language. [2] The Bengali ERV is copyrighted by Bible League International and classified as a revision, indicating it built upon earlier Bengali Bible translation work. Bengali has a long history of Bible translation dating to the early 19th century, when William Carey and the Serampore Mission produced the first complete Bengali Bible in 1809. [3]
