Jur Modo 1998 Edition (BEXWBT)

Overview

The Jur Modo 1998 Edition — titled Ndose Kɔdɔ Laka, Buku ꞌba Tisaki ni Tɔdɔ to Lömu Laꞌja ꞌBa Yësu Kurïsïtö Ŋere Ze — contains the New Testament together with the books of Genesis and Exodus in the Jur Modo language, published by Wycliffe Bible Translators in 1998. [1] Jur Modo is a Central Sudanic (Nilo-Saharan) language spoken in South Sudan, primarily in the Mundri area of Western Equatoria State, and has four dialect varieties: Lori, Modo, Wira, and Wetu. [2][3] The translation was carried out with key contributions from Wycliffe Bible Translators missionaries Andrew and Janet Persson, who worked on the Jur Modo New Testament during the 1980s and 1990s. [4] SIL International provided technical support for the project as part of a broader set of twelve South Sudanese language communities that received New Testaments with SIL assistance; the Jur Modo community was one of the earliest in that group to have Genesis and Exodus included alongside the New Testament. [3] The language employs a tonal writing system based on the Latin alphabet, and the 1998 text represents the first complete Scripture publication in this language.
