Bimoba Bible (BIMWBT)
Overview
Bimoba: Yennu Gbouŋ Mɔɔr Bible of Ghana.
The Bimoba Bible — titled Yennu Gbouŋ Mɔɔr — is the complete Protestant Bible in the Bimoba language of northern Ghana, published in 1996 by GILLBT (Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation) and Wycliffe Bible Translators. [1][2] Translation work in Bimoba has a history stretching back to the 1950s, when Assemblies of God missionaries first arrived in the region; the Gospel of Mark was translated by Davison and Symonds in 1958, and the Gospel of Luke followed in 1970 under Gillian Jacobs of GIL (the forerunner of GILLBT), who also produced a foundational phonology and grammar for the language. [3] The primary translator of the Bimoba Bible was Mary Steele, a British nurse who joined Wycliffe in 1959 and arrived in Ghana in 1962; she translated the Bimoba New Testament in 1985 and then the complete Bible, which was published in 1996 (with a revised edition in 2004). [4][5] Steele received an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2008 and a national award from the President of Ghana in 2015 for her contributions to Bible translation, literacy, and development. [4] GILLBT, which grew out of Wycliffe's partnership with the University of Ghana beginning in 1962, served as the institutional sponsor for the project and oversaw accompanying literacy programmes in the Northern Region.
