Southern Birifor 2006 Edition (BIVWBT)

Overview

The Southern Birifor 2006 Edition — titled A Nãaŋmɩn Nɛtɩr Oaalaa Gãn, Bɩrfʊɔr — is the New Testament in the Southern Birifor language of Ghana, published by Wycliffe Bible Translators in 2006. [1] Southern Birifor is a Gur language of the Niger-Congo family spoken primarily in the Wa West District of Ghana's Upper West Region and in the Northern Region; the language is also spoken by a smaller community in Côte d'Ivoire, with approximately 183,000 speakers in Ghana and 4,310 in Côte d'Ivoire. [1][2] Speakers refer to their language as Birfoɔr, and it is closely related to Malba Birifor, spoken in Burkina Faso. [1] The Latin-based orthography for Southern Birifor was standardized in 2004, just two years before the New Testament publication, and the language has been used in radio broadcasts in Ghana. [1] The translation was carried out under the auspices of GILLBT (Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation), which grew out of Wycliffe's partnership with the University of Ghana in 1962 and has worked in 47 Ghanaian languages.
