New Testament in the Koya dialect of the Budu language, a Bantu language (Guthrie Zone D.30) spoken by approximately 500,000 people in Wamba Territory, Haut-Uele, northeastern DRC. The translation was completed in 2021 and dedicated on February 7, 2023, in a multi-day celebration in the Wamba area attended by all Budu chiefs and the provincial governor. Chiefs ceremonially lifted the Scriptures on their traditional tipoi (chief's litter), and one elder chief quoted Luke 2 (Simeon's prayer), saying he could now depart in peace. The Budu live along both banks of the Nepoko River in tropical rainforest — the area is extremely isolated, with roads accessible only by bicycle. WEC International (Worldwide Evangelisation for Christ) had a long mission presence in Budu territory; WEC founder Charles Studd died there and is buried at Ibambi. The Koya dialect (east of the Nepoko, uses the letter z) and Nita dialect (west) consider themselves one people. A separate Budu Nita translation also exists (YouVersion ID 3919). Text is available on YouVersion and via Google Play apps with Budu alongside French and Kiswahili.
