Overview
Buamu Laa is the complete New Testament (27 books) in the Láá Láá Bwamu (Bwamu, Laa Laa) language of western Burkina Faso, published by L'Association Nationale pour la Traduction de la Bible et l'Alphabétisation (ANTBA) in 2023 and available via YouVersion/Bible.com (ID 3692; abbreviation: BWJ). ANTBA is Burkina Faso's national Bible translation organization and one of the most productive minority-language translation bodies in West Africa, having completed scripture in numerous Burkinabè languages. The community's own name for their language is Kàdenbà; the ISO/Ethnologue name is Láá Láá Bwamu or Bwamu, Laa Laa, distinguishing this dialect from the related Cwi Bwamu (bwx) spoken nearby.
Language and People
Láá Láá Bwamu (ISO 639-3: bwj; autonym: Kàdenbà) is a Gur (Voltaic) language: Niger-Congo → Atlantic-Congo → Volta-Congo → Gur (Voltaic). The Bwamu language cluster (also called Bobo Wule or Bwaba) has two primary varieties: Láá Láá Bwamu (bwj) and Cwi Bwamu (bwx). "Laa Laa" and "Cwi" are self-referential dialect names.
The Bwamu speakers inhabit the Kossi Province (Nouna area) and Dédougou Province of Boucle du Mouhoun Region, western Burkina Faso. The region lies within the Volta River basin, northeast of Côte d'Ivoire and Mali.
Estimated speakers: approximately 80,000–150,000 across both Bwamu varieties (combined estimates; individual dialect figures are not widely published).
Cultural Context
The Bwamu (Bobo Wule) people are one of several major agricultural groups of western Burkina Faso. They are closely associated with the Bobo people but maintain a distinct linguistic identity. Traditional religion, Islam, and Christianity all have significant presence in the community. Burkina Faso's Christian community is approximately 20–25% of the national population; ANTBA's translation work serves both Protestant and Catholic communities.
