Kaqchikel South Central (CAKWBTSC)
Overview
The Kaqchikel South Central New Testament (2007) is a translation of the New Testament into the South Central dialect of Kaqchikel, one of eleven regional dialects of this Mayan language spoken in the central highlands of Guatemala. [1] [2] Published by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc., the translation bears the vernacular title "Ri Cꞌacꞌacꞌ Ruvujil Cꞌaslen." [3] Kaqchikel is a member of the Quichean-Mamean branch of the Mayan language family, closely related to Kʼicheʼ and Tzʼutujil. [1] Bible translation into Kaqchikel has a long history: Cameron Townsend, who would go on to found Wycliffe Bible Translators, arrived in Guatemala in 1917 and published the first Kaqchikel New Testament in 1931 after learning the language and devising an alphabet for it. [4] The Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), representing Wycliffe, has been active in Guatemala since 1948, producing translations in multiple Kaqchikel dialects. [5]
