Tabasco Chontal New Testament (CHFTBL)
Overview
New Testament in Tabasco Chontal, titled U Chʼuʼul Tʼan Dios ("The Holy Word of God"), published in 1977 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. The translation was the work of Kathryn C. Keller, a Wycliffe/SIL missionary linguist who spent forty years working with the Chontal community in southern Mexico beginning in the early 1940s. [5] Keller first had to create a written form of the language before translation could proceed, developing phonetic analysis techniques including palatography to document Chontal speech sounds. [5] She collaborated with Plácido Luciano G., a native Chontal speaker from Tapotzingo, who also co-compiled the bilingual Diccionario chontal de Tabasco and contributed to a Chontal grammar. [3][6] Tabasco Chontal is a Mayan language spoken by approximately 27,700 people in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. [1][2] Audio recordings for portions of the New Testament were later produced in 2000 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. [4]
