Chuabo Bible — Bíblia Chuabo
Overview
A complete Bible in Chuwabu (Echuabo) was completed between 1978 and 2003. The translation organization and publisher have not been definitively confirmed from publicly accessible sources; SIL International has maintained a long linguistic presence in the language (publishing a Chuwabo–English dictionary in 2018), making SIL Moçambique the most likely producer of the translation. Audio access is available through Faith Comes By Hearing (FCBH code: CHWBSM). A community online reading version exists at siaup.com/biblia.
Note: The Mozambique Bible Society (Sociedade Bíblica de Moçambique) currently lists an Echuabo translation as an in-progress project on their website for ~1.05 million speakers of the language in Zambezia Province — suggesting they may be producing a new translation, distinct from the 1978–2003 edition, which may have gone out of active use. Additionally, Jehovah's Witnesses published a Matthew in Chuabo in 2021 and the full NT in July 2024, which are separate proprietary editions.
Language and People
Chuwabu (ISO 639-3: chw), also written Chuabo, Chwabo, or Echuabo, is a Bantu language spoken primarily in Zambezia Province, Mozambique, with approximately 1–1.5 million speakers. It is one of the larger languages of Mozambique.
Publishing and Organizations
Publisher unconfirmed; SIL Moçambique most likely. For the new translation in progress, contact Mozambique Bible Society (biblesociety-mozambique.org).
