Asháninka New Testament (CNIWBT)

Overview

The Asháninka New Testament, titled Irineane tasorentsi oquenquetsatacotaqueri Avincatsarite Jesoquirishito, was published in 2008 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc., building on an earlier edition first completed in 1972. [1] The translation was begun by SIL linguists Willard and Lee Kindberg, who arrived in Peru in 1952 and worked with the Asháninka Campa community for over two decades; the New Testament, with Old Testament supporting Scriptures, was completed and dedicated in 1976. [4] Asháninka is an Arawakan language of the Campa (Pre-Andean) branch, spoken across the central Peruvian Amazon in the departments of Junín, Pasco, Huánuco, Ucayali, Cusco, and Ayacucho; the Asháninka are the largest indigenous group in the Peruvian Amazon, with a population recorded at 117,955 in the 2017 national census. [2] The language is closely related to, but distinct from, the several Ashéninka varieties spoken further north, and the broader Asháninka-Ashéninka complex belongs to the Maipurean language family. [3] Old Testament portions have been available since 1977. [1]
