Khumi Chin 2005 Edition (CNKBSM)

Overview

The Khumi Chin 2005 Edition is a New Testament translation in the Khumi Chin language, published by the Bible Society of Myanmar under the United Bible Societies. [1] The Khumi (also spelled Khami) are a Chin subgroup of approximately 64,000 people living primarily in Paletwa Township of Chin State and parts of northern Rakhine State in Myanmar, with smaller communities in southern Bangladesh and India's Mizoram state. [2] Bible translation into Khumi Chin has a long history: the first Scripture portions were translated beginning in 1935 by Edwin Rowlands of the Northeast India General Mission (NEIGM) and E.W. Francis, assisted by Heng Ngaw, Pra Neaung, and Len Vai, who translated the Gospel of Mark in 1945 and completed the New Testament in 1959, published by the Bible Society in Rangoon. [2] This 2005 edition represents a modern common-language translation. A complete Khumi Chin Bible was subsequently published in 2014, nearly 80 years after initial translation efforts began. [2] Approximately 80% of the Khumi people identify as Christian, a remarkable transformation given that the 1931 census recorded no Christians among them. [2]
