The New Testament in Dendi (DDNBIV)

Overview

The New Testament in Dendi was published by Bibles International in 1995 and was the first book published in the Dendi language in Benin. [1] The translation was led by EBM (now Faith Baptist Mission) missionary Miriam Morin, who transferred from Niger to Benin in 1978 to work on the project, and formally began translating in 1985 with a team of national translators including Alassane, Moussa, and Sanni Banya. [1] [2] Bibles International officially adopted the project in June 1991 after the initial draft was completed. [1] A four-hour dedication ceremony was held on December 4, 1995, in Guene, where former BI Director Fred Carlson gave the dedication address and a government official called the New Testament "a treasure." [1] The Dendi people, numbering approximately 270,000, live along the Niger and Medru rivers in northern Benin and are predominantly Muslim. [1] Old Testament translation began even before the New Testament dedication, with Genesis and Exodus already completed; Dr. Hantz Bernard began consulting on the Old Testament project in July 1996.
