Dhimal (also known as Dhemal, ISO 639-3: dhi) is a Sino-Tibetan language spoken by approximately 20,000 people, primarily in the eastern Terai lowlands and foothills of Nepal, with additional speakers (around 5,100) in the Darjeeling district of India. The Dhimal people are an indigenous group with a distinct cultural identity, traditionally practicing animism and maintaining rich oral traditions. Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. undertook translation of the New Testament in Dhimal, with Bible portions first appearing around 2000 and the New Testament completed between 2017 and 2024. A digital Dhimal Bible app is available through Google Play, and the Nepal MatriBhasha Dhimal website provides further language resources. The Love Fellowship has also produced a Dhimal Bible translation, indicating growing investment in this community. The audio New Testament makes the Scripture accessible in a community where oral tradition is strong. A Jesus Film in Dhimal has also been produced. The Dhimal people are classified as unreached by evangelical Christianity, with very few believers, making accessible audio Scripture a vital tool for evangelism and church planting in this community.
