Djinang Bible Portions (DJIWBT)

Overview

The Djinang Bible Portions contain Genesis chapters 1-31 and 1 John, completed in 1985 by Wycliffe Bible Translators [1][2]. Djinang is one of the Yolngu languages spoken in the north-east Arnhem Land region of the Northern Territory, around the Blyth and Goyder rivers near the Ramingining community [3][4]. Extensive linguistic documentation of Djinang was carried out by Bruce E. Waters, who authored An Interim Djinang Dictionary (1983) and A Grammar of Djinang through SIL, as well as a comparative study Djinang and Djinba: a grammatical and historical perspective [4][5]. The translation work in Djinang was part of the broader efforts of AuSIL (formerly SIL Australia), which has been working in Australia since 1961 on scripture translation, literacy, and linguistic research among Indigenous language communities [6].
