The Ekit language — also known as Ekid — is spoken by approximately 505,000 Eket people in Eket and Esit Eket Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State in southeastern Nigeria. Despite a high rate of Christian identity in the community (around 94%), the Eket people have long lacked Scripture in their heart language. The Nigeria Bible Translation Trust (NBTT), which has been the primary engine of minority-language Bible translation in Nigeria since assuming that mandate in 1976, undertook work in Ekit as part of its over-107 active translation projects across the country. The resulting audio New Testament, produced and made available, gives Ekit speakers their first sustained access to the New Testament in their own language — a landmark for a community where literacy in Ekit is limited and oral access is essential.
