Modern Greek (1904) Ecumenical Text (ELLEPT)
Overview
The Ecumenical Patriarchal Text is a Greek New Testament edition published on 22 February 1904 by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, officially titled "The New Testament, Approved by the Great Church of Christ." [1] The edition was commissioned by Patriarch Constantine V, who in 1899 established a committee consisting of Metropolitan Michael Kleovoulos of Sardis, Metropolitan Apostolos Christodoulou of Stavroupoli, and Professor Vasileios Antoniades of the Theological School of Halki. [2] Antoniades personally studied 45 manuscripts from Mount Athos and Constantinople, primarily lectionaries dating from the 9th to the 16th century. The resulting text is Byzantine in character and was intended to provide the best reconstruction of the most ancient ecclesiastical text tradition of the Church of Constantinople. [1] Revised editions were subsequently published by the Patriarchate in 1907 and 1912. [2] The Patriarchal Text remains the authoritative New Testament text used in Greek Orthodox worship.
