World English Catholic Edition (ENGWEBC)

Overview

The World English Bible Catholic Edition (WEB-CE) is the Catholic variant of the World English Bible, a public domain modern English translation. [1] The WEB was initiated in 1994 by Michael Paul Johnson as an updated revision of the American Standard Version (ASV) of 1901, drawing also on the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia for the Old Testament, the Greek Majority Text for the New Testament, and the Revised Version Apocrypha and Brenton's Septuagint for the deuterocanonical books. [1] [2] The Catholic Edition presents the biblical books in the traditional Catholic order, uses only the Greek Septuagint versions of Esther and Daniel (with additions), and omits books not recognized as canonical or deuterocanonical by the Roman Catholic Church. [1] Unlike the standard WEB edition, which renders the divine name as "Yahweh," the Catholic Edition follows traditional convention and uses "LORD" in small capitals. [1] The translation was deemed complete in 2020 after more than 25 years of work by Johnson and volunteer contributors. [2]
