French 1885 Darby (FRADBY)
Overview
The French Darby Bible (La Sainte Bible) is a translation by John Nelson Darby (1800-1882), a founder of the Plymouth Brethren movement and an accomplished linguist who mastered Hebrew, Greek, English, French, German, and Italian. [1] Darby undertook parallel translations of the Bible into French, English, and German directly from the Hebrew and Greek source texts. The French New Testament, titled Les Livres Saints Connus sous le Nom de Nouveau Testament, was first issued in undated parts between 1859 and 1867, with revised editions appearing in 1872, 1875, and 1878. [1] Much of the translation work was carried out in Pau, in southern France, primarily for the benefit of French-speaking Brethren assemblies in Switzerland. [1] The French Old Testament was completed in Pau in 1881 with the collaboration of Pierre Schlumberger and J.W. Lowe, and the complete Bible was published in parts from 1881 to 1885, three years after Darby's death. [1] [2] The translation is praised for its rigor and fidelity to the original languages and remains one of the most consulted French Bible translations in Brethren circles.
