Southwest Gbaya 2005 Edition (GSOCAR)

Overview

The Southwest Gbaya 2005 Edition is a New Testament translation published for the Southwest Gbaya-speaking community of the Central African Republic. [1] The Gbaya languages belong to the Adamawa-Ubangi branch of the Niger-Congo language family. [2] The translation was carried out with the support of the Bible Society in the Central African Republic (Alliance Biblique en Centrafrique), based in Bangui. Old Testament translation work has subsequently been undertaken, with teams working to translate from the original Hebrew into Southwest Gbaya. [3]

Southwest Gbaya (ISO 639-3: gso) is spoken by approximately 220,000 people in the western Central African Republic. [1] The Gbaya are one of the largest ethnic groups in the CAR, numbering close to one million across all Gbaya language varieties, which span the CAR and neighboring Cameroon. [2] The Gbaya languages are traditionally classified within the Ubangian family, though some scholars have proposed alternative classifications. [4] [Glottolog: sout2785]
