Farefare 2003 Edition (GURWBT)

Overview

The Farefare 2003 Edition is a Bible translation in the Farefare language (also known as Frafra or Gurenne), spoken by the Frafra people of northern Ghana, particularly in the Upper East Region around the Bolgatanga area [1]. The language belongs to the Gur branch of the Niger-Congo family and is spoken by approximately 638,000 people in Ghana, with additional speakers in southern Burkina Faso [2]. Translation work in Farefare began in the 1970s, when linguist Robert Schaefer conducted foundational research including a phonology sketch (1975) and contributed to Bible translation in the language [3]. The translation was published by Wycliffe Bible Translators in 2003, with the vernacular title "Nawennene Yetoga la Ninkare," and represents a significant milestone for the Frafra-speaking community [4]. The Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation (GILLBT), which began in 1962 as SIL International's first work in Africa, has facilitated Bible translation across dozens of Ghanaian languages including Farefare [5].
