Overview

The Salkinson-Ginsburg Hebrew New Testament is a highly regarded literary Hebrew translation of the New Testament, first published in Vienna in 1886. The primary translator was Isaac Edward Salkinson (1820-1883), a Russian-born Hebraist from Vilna who converted to Christianity in London and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in Glasgow in 1859. [1] Salkinson began the translation for the British Missionary Society in 1877 but died in 1883 before completing Acts. The work was finished and edited by Christian David Ginsburg (1831-1914), an eminent Masoretic scholar who edited the Massoretico-Critical Text of the Hebrew Bible (1894). [1] Salkinson was also known for translating Milton's "Paradise Lost" and Shakespeare into Hebrew. The translation is based on the Textus Receptus and is in the public domain. [1]
