Hindi Old Version (HINOLD)
Overview
The Hindi Old Version (OV) is a full Bible translation in Hindi with roots in the long tradition of Hindi Scripture translation that dates back to the early nineteenth century. Hindi Bible translation began with the work of William Carey and the Baptist missionaries at Serampore, who published the Gospels in Devanagari script in 1819. [1] Subsequent revision work was carried out over the following decades by missionaries including J.T. Thompson (Baptist), William Hooper (Church Missionary Society), and Samuel H. Kellogg (Presbyterian), who led a team translating the Old Testament in Allahabad. [1] The Hindi Bible went through multiple revisions over nearly three centuries, with the Bible Society of India completing the latest major revision in 1967. [2] This "Old Version" (Re-edited) edition, copyrighted by the Bible Society of India and originally published by the British and Foreign Bible Society, represents the traditional Hindi Bible text that has been widely used by Hindi-speaking Christians in India. It remains in print and is available alongside newer translations such as the Hindi Easy-to-Read Version and the Indian Revised Version.
