Honi (also called Haoni, Baihong, or Hao-Bai) is a Tibeto-Burman language of the Loloish branch spoken in Yunnan Province, China, primarily in Mojiang, Yuanjiang, and Pu'er counties, by approximately 403,000 people across two main dialect groups — Baihong (247,000 speakers) and Haoni (156,000 speakers). Though the Chinese government classifies Honi speakers as part of the broader Hani nationality, Honi itself is a distinct language with its own phonology and vocabulary. Bible translation work for minority languages in Yunnan has proceeded cautiously, primarily through the Yunnan Provincial CC&TSPM (Three-Self Patriotic Movement) in partnership with the United Bible Societies. The NVS Version New Testament for Honi,'s Bible.is platform, provides audio scripture access for Honi speakers — a significant resource for a community that Joshua Project lists as only partially reached, and where evangelical Christianity is still in early stages of growth. The audio format is well-suited to the community's context, where access to written scripture may be limited.
