New Testament in Huitoto, Murui (PE:huu:Huitoto, Murui)
The Murui Huitoto New Testament, titled "Jusinamui uai: Jusinamui jito rafue illa rabenico," was translated by Bryan Gordon Burtch (1926-2017), a linguist and missionary with Wycliffe Bible Translators who served in Peru, Colombia, Panama, and Aruba [1]. Burtch, who earned a B.A. from Wheaton College (1947) and an M.A. from Dallas Theological Seminary (1951), married Shirley Fairbanks in Lima, Peru in 1954, and together they dedicated their careers to linguistic work among the Murui Huitoto people [1]. The New Testament was first published in 1978, with a revised edition issued in 2008 by Wycliffe Bible Translators [1][2]. Shirley Burtch also compiled the "Diccionario Huitoto Murui," a two-volume Murui-Spanish and Spanish-Murui dictionary published in 1983 by the Ministerio de Educacion and the Instituto Linguistico de Verano (SIL) [3]. Murui Huitoto is a Witotoan language spoken along the Ampiyacu, Putumayo, and Napo rivers in Peru's Loreto Region by approximately 1,000 speakers [4].
