Igbo Contemporary Bible™ (IBOBIB)

Overview

The Igbo Contemporary Bible (Baịbụlụ Nsọ nʼIgbo Ndị Ugbu a) is a modern Igbo-language Bible translation published by Biblica. The copyright dates of 1980, 1988, 2019, and 2020 indicate a multi-decade translation and revision process. [1] The initial work was done under Living Bibles International (LBI), which had established Living Bibles Nigeria to produce contemporary Scripture translations in Nigerian languages; LBI merged with the International Bible Society in 1992 to form what is now Biblica. [2] The Igbo Living Bible New Testament was first published in 1988. [3] The translation was subsequently revised and expanded into a full Bible, with the most recent update in 2020. [1] The earlier Union Igbo Bible, translated by British Anglican missionary Thomas John Dennis and completed by 1913, had long been the standard Igbo Bible but was criticized — notably by novelist Chinua Achebe — for its impact on the Igbo language, contributing to demand for a contemporary translation. [3] The Igbo Contemporary Bible is released under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license and is available digitally through YouVersion and Biblica's website. [1]
