The Idaasha New Testament, completed and dedicated in April 2020, is the product of a remarkable community-driven translation effort among the Idaasha (Ede Idaca) people of south-central Benin. The Idaasha, numbering over 160,000 people living around the city of Dassa-Zoumé near the Togo border, were so eager for Scripture in their heart language that local believers began translating the Gospel of Luke without any formal training. Their initiative eventually drew the partnership of Wycliffe Benin and other translation organizations, accelerating the work toward a complete New Testament. Translation consultant and Wycliffe Benin executive director Prosper Nongnidé led the translation team to completion. The New Testament dedication in 2020—held during pandemic restrictions that limited public celebration—nonetheless sparked immediate enthusiasm: approximately 4,000 copies sold within the first month of publication. News of the dedication so moved a neighboring village king that he hired tutors to teach himself to read in the Idaasha language.
