Ifugao, Amganad Bible (IFAWBT)
Overview
The Amganad Ifugao Bible, titled Nan Hapit Apu Dios ("The Word of God") in the vernacular, is a complete Bible translation published in 2014 by Wycliffe Bible Translators [1]. The Amganad Ifugao people number approximately 38,000 and inhabit the municipalities of Hungduan and Banaue in Ifugao Province in the Cordillera region of northern Luzon, Philippines [2]. Earlier New Testament portions in Amganad Ifugao were available from the 1980s onward, with SIL linguists Leonard E. Newell and Doreen Newell among the earliest researchers to document the language, compiling Ifugao vocabulary as early as 1958 [3]. The translation reflects careful cultural and linguistic adaptation; for example, the concept of "giving" a person is avoided because in Amganad Ifugao culture "you can give animals and things, but you can't give people," leading translators to render such phrases using "sent" instead [4]. The 2014 edition represents the first complete Bible in Amganad Ifugao, encompassing both Old and New Testaments [2].
