Ika New Testament (IKKWBT)
Overview
The Ika New Testament is a translation of the New Testament into the Ika language, an Igboid language spoken by the Ika people of Delta and Edo states in southern Nigeria [1]. Bible translation work in Ika began in 1998 at Owa-Alidinma near Agbor, Delta State, with the printing of the Four Gospels ("Ndi-ozi Eno") completed in 2000 [2]. The New Testament, titled "Elu Ọhụn: Ẹkụkwọ-Nsọ (Azụụn Ọhụn rịn'a)," was published in 2010 by Wycliffe Bible Translators in cooperation with the Ika Bible Translation Committee [3]. The translation project was supported by Dr. and Mrs. C.O. Anya, who sold their parcel of land to fund printing when financial difficulties arose [2]. The complete Ika Bible (Old and New Testaments) was later dedicated on March 24, 2019, at the Cathedral Church of Ascension in Boji-Boji Owa, Delta State [2]. The Ika translation initiative eventually grew into the Mission for Language Translation (MLT), formally established in 2016-2017, which now manages Bible translation work across 14 language groups in Nigeria [4].
