The New Testament in Western Jakalteko (JACSBG)

Overview

The New Testament in Western Jakalteko is a translation into Popti' (also known as Jakalteko or Jacalteco), a Q'anjob'alan Mayan language spoken by approximately 90,000 people primarily in the municipality of Jacaltenango in the department of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, and in parts of Chiapas, Mexico. [1] Popti' belongs to the Q'anjob'alan branch of the Mayan language family, which also includes Q'anjob'al, Chuj, and Akateko. [2] Bible translation work in Guatemala's Mayan languages was significantly advanced by SIL International, which began operations in Guatemala in 1952 and completed 24 New Testament translations before closing its branch office in 2001. [3] The Central American Mission also contributed to Scripture translation efforts in the region. [3] This Western Jakalteko New Testament was published by the Bible Society of Guatemala in 2004. The AECM Jakalteko organization continues to work on making Scripture available to the Popti' community, including Old Testament translation. [4]
