Jamaican Creole English 2012 Edition (JAMBSW)
Overview
Di Jamiekan Nyuu Testiment is a New Testament translation into Jamaican Creole English (Patwa/Patois), the heart language of over three million Jamaicans. [1] Published by the Bible Society of the West Indies in 2012, it represents the culmination of approximately twenty years of work by trained translators, Bible scholars, and linguists, making it the largest and most standardized body of written work in Jamaican Creole. [1] The translation uses the Cassidy/JLU orthography, a phonemic writing system developed by linguist Frederic Cassidy. [2] A precursor publication, "Jiizas: di Buk We Luuk Rait bout Im" (the Gospel of Luke), was released in 2010. [2] The published edition is available as a diglot, with the Jamaican Creole text in one column and the King James Version in the other, reflecting the KJV's widespread use in Jamaica. [1] The translation has been noted for its cultural significance; Noel Leo Erskine, Professor of Theology and Ethics at Emory University, argued that making Scripture available in Patwa allows Jamaicans to engage with the Bible in their primary language for the first time.
