Jukun Takum 1994 Edition (JBUIBS)
Overview
The Jukun Takum New Testament was published in 1994 by the Nigeria Bible Translation Trust. The idea of translating the Bible into the Jukun language originated in 1956 with American missionary Margrete Dykestra, who was assisted by Malam Joel Omiri. Before leaving Nigeria, Dykestra handed a completed New Testament manuscript to continue the work. [1] Jukun Takum is classified by Ethnologue as a language of Cameroon that is used as a trade language in Nigeria, with roughly 2,400 L1 speakers (mostly in Cameroon) but approximately 40,000 L2 speakers in Nigeria. [2] The translation was produced for the Jukun community in Takum and Ussa Local Government Areas of Taraba State, Nigeria. In 2022, retired General Theophilus Danjuma inaugurated the Jukun Bible Institute in Takum LGA to enhance Bible translation into the Jukun language. [1] Lutheran Bible Translators is also involved in ongoing Jukun Takum Scripture translation work. [3]
