Abun New Testament (KGRLAI)

Overview

The Abun New Testament is a first translation of the New Testament into the Abun language, published in 2004 by the Indonesian Bible Society (Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia). [1] Abun is a language isolate spoken by approximately 3,000 people along the northern coast of the Bird's Head Peninsula in Papua, Indonesia. [2][3] The translation was produced as a diglot edition with Indonesian and represents a significant achievement for one of the world's smaller and more linguistically isolated language communities.

Language and People

Abun (ISO 639-3: kgr), also known as Yimbun, Anden, Manif, or Karon Pantai, is spoken by approximately 3,000 people in Sausapor District, Tambrauw Regency, along the northern coast of the Bird's Head Peninsula in Papua, Indonesia. [2][3] The speakers are spread across 18 villages and several isolated hamlets. [2] Abun is classified as a language isolate -- it has not been conclusively related to any other known language family, though a link to the West Bird's Head languages has been proposed. [2][3] The language is fully tonal with three lexical tones and has an SVO word order. [2] [Glottolog: abun1252]
