Kyrgyz New Testament and Old Testament Portions (KIRIBT)

Overview

This is a Kyrgyz New Testament with Old Testament portions, published in 2005 by the Bible Society of Kyrgyzstan in collaboration with the Lingvoservice Center and the United Bible Societies. [1] The vernacular title is "Кыргызча Инжил - ЛС версия" (Kyrgyz Gospel - LS version). Kyrgyz Bible translation began in the early 1990s: the first modern Kyrgyz New Testament was published in 1991 by the Institute for Bible Translation in Stockholm, translated by Sovet Sadyrov with Pavlus Artur and a group of Kyrgyzstani Germans. A complete Bible including a revised New Testament and Old Testament was published in 2004 by Ray of Hope, which became the most commonly used Kyrgyz Bible translation. [2] The 2005 Lingua Service / United Bible Societies edition represented an independent translation effort. [2]

Language and People

Kirghiz (ISO 639-3: kir) is a Kipchak Turkic language and the national language of Kyrgyzstan, spoken by approximately 4.5 million people worldwide. [3] The figure of 118,000 speakers listed above refers specifically to the Afghan Kyrgyz diaspora community. [Glottolog: kirg1245]
