Kusaal 1996 Edition (KUSWBT)

Overview

The Kusaal 1996 Edition, titled Winaꞌam Gbauŋ, is a New Testament translation in the Kusaal language of Ghana. Kusaal was among the first six languages that the Summer Institute of Linguistics (later GILLBT) began working in when operations started in Ghana in 1962. [1] British missionaries David and Nancy Spratt were assigned to the Kusaasi area to carry out linguistic research and Bible translation. After fourteen years of work, the Spratts, along with Rev. Panaad Azong, Rev. Adam Anaba, and others, completed the New Testament, which was dedicated in 1976 as the first New Testament completed by SIL in Ghana. [1] The 1996 edition catalogued here represents a subsequent publication of the Kusaal New Testament. A complete Bible, including a revised New Testament and a newly translated Old Testament in the Agole dialect, was later dedicated on February 20, 2016, at Bawku. [1]

Language and People

Kusaal (ISO 639-3: kus) is a Gur language of the Oti-Volta branch, spoken by the Kusaasi people primarily in the Upper East Region of Ghana and in adjacent areas of Burkina Faso. The language has approximately 549,000 speakers. [2] A unified orthography has been in use since 2013. [1] Glottolog: kusa1250.
