The Lama New Testament (LASABT)

Overview

The first New Testament in Lama, Togo. Translated by Neal and Carol Brinneman (SIL). Neal Brinneman, a member of SIL International, arrived in Togo in early 1972 and served as a Bible translator with the Lama team of northern Togo from 1972 to 1993. [1] The Lama New Testament was dedicated in 1995. [2] An Old Testament translation project was started in 2000 in cooperation with the local Lama church association, the Bible Society of Togo, and SIL. [2] Two members of the translation team received specialized training through programs in Jerusalem, and one at his denominational theological college. [2] All Old Testament books were completed by November 2021, with technical review and harmonization work ongoing as of 2023. [2] Neal Brinneman continued working on the Lama Bible project until his death on May 26, 2018 at age 83 in Charlotte, North Carolina. [1]

Language and People

Lama (Togo) (ISO 639-3: las) is spoken by approximately 258,000 people. Speakers live chiefly in northern Togo around the town of Kande, with many having migrated to other parts of Togo and also to Ghana and Benin. [3] [Glottolog: lama1275]
