Lahu Bible (LHUTBS)

Overview

The Lahu Bible is a New Testament translation in the Lahu language, published by the Bible Society of Thailand. This edition represents the first Bible translation into Lahu. The foundation for Lahu Scripture was laid by William Marcus Young (1861-1936), a pioneer American Baptist missionary who arrived in Burma in 1892 and began evangelizing among the Lahu by 1901. [1] Young's work, aided by Karen pastors, led to the conversion of a significant proportion of the Lahu population in Burma and subsequently in China. [1] Paul Lewis, an American Baptist missionary who went to Burma in the early 1950s, created a Roman-based script for the Lahu language (commonly known as the Baptist script) and translated the Bible into Lahu. [2] When Burma expelled foreign missionaries in 1966, Lewis continued his work with the Lahu in Thailand. [2] The Lahu are a Tibeto-Burman hill tribe spanning China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos.
