Overview

The Lushai Mizo 2005 Edition is a New Testament translation in the Mizo language (also known as Lushai), the lingua franca of Mizoram state in northeast India. Bible translation into Mizo has a long history tied to the arrival of Christian missionaries in the late nineteenth century. Welsh missionaries Rev. J.H. Lorrain and Rev. F.W. Savidge, sponsored by the Arthington Aborigines Mission, arrived in Mizoram in 1894 and reduced the Mizo language to written form using the Roman script. [1] They translated the Gospels of Luke and John and the Acts of the Apostles into Mizo as early as 1898. [1] Welsh Calvinistic Methodist missionary D.E. Jones arrived in 1897 and established the Presbyterian Church in Mizoram. [2] The first Mizo New Testament was published in 1916, and the complete Mizo Bible was published in 1959, with the launch ceremony held on 6 September 1959 at Mission Veng Biak In, Aizawl. [1] This 2005 edition represents a later publication of the New Testament text.
