Overview

The Madurese Today's Madura Bible, titled Alketab E Dhalem Basa Madura, is a complete Old and New Testament published in 1994 by the Indonesian Bible Society (Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia, LAI). [1] It provides a contemporary Madurese rendering of all 66 books of the Protestant canon, serving one of the largest regional language communities in Indonesia. [2] The translation uses a modern, accessible style designed for today's Madurese readers, and represents a significant publishing achievement given the relatively limited amount of Christian literature available in the language.

Madurese is a major Austronesian language of the Malayo-Polynesian branch, spoken primarily on the island of Madura off the northeastern coast of Java and in large diaspora communities across eastern Java. It is one of Indonesia's most widely spoken regional languages. The Madurese people have a distinct cultural identity, known for their cattle-raising traditions, salt production, and seafaring heritage. The language uses the Latin script for modern writing, though historically it was also written in a Javanese-derived script.
